The Jeep Renegade was one of the more recent additions to the Jeep family. Unveiled in 2014, and hitting the roads in 2015, the Renegade is perfect for those who want something a bit more practical, but still want to be part of the Jeep family. If you're in the market for a used Jeep, this article is for you. We'll take a look at the different years to give you some top features to look for in a used Jeep Renegade.
Key takeaways
- If you're looking for something that is more fuel efficient to be a daily driver, then you'll need something that is front-wheel drive, which unfortunately doesn't exist for 2023 models.
- 2022 saw some promise for the Renegade, coming with some new features that helped the Renegade feel more modern.
- There's a few engines that you can look for, with two being available the entire lifecycle of the Renegade.
- If you're wanting something a bit more flashy, and something that may be a bit rarer than other Renegades, you can look for the Upland trim. It isn't the most expensive trim, but it is one that most people won't recognize right away.
First Generation (2015-2023)
When this model hit the market, it was available in both front-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive as well as 4 trims to pick from. The trims were Sport, Latitude, Limited, and the Trailhawk. The Renegade was also equipped with a My Sky dual panel removable roof. This was supposed to mimic the “open-air freedom that originated with the legendary 1941 Willys MB Jeep” as stated by Car and Driver during their first Renegade review.
The interior of the vehicle can be found in both leather, and cloth seating. Seating up to five passengers, making this a decent family vehicle. A rear backup camera was also optional for this vehicle, helping you give you and your passengers more safety if you find a Renegade that is equipped with it.
Coming with a few engine options to look for, there's the 1.3L I4 that can produce 177 horsepower. A 1.4L I4 that can be found on models from 2014-2018, getting 160 horsepower. While the last engine you can find is a 2.4L I4 that can produce 180 horsepower.
Despite having a relatively short time on the market, the Renegade did see a handful of changes. When 2018 came around, the new displays ranged from 7” to 8.4” depending on the trim level.
The next change didn't come until 2022, this saw all trims receive the large 8.4” touchscreen as a standard feature. This infotainment system came with satellite radio, integrated GPS navigation, and an HD radio.
When 2023 came around, the writing was on the wall for the Renegade. This year saw the discontinuation of the Sport trim, as well as front-wheel drive Renegades. Being that front-wheel drive was axed, the 2023 Renegade has a worse fuel economy, as noted by the EPA's metrics. As a last hope, the Upland trim made its return, and with it came some new bronze stitching.
Final Thoughts
Unfortunately, Jeep wasn't able to make the Renegade work. The Renegade and the North American market just didn't mesh well, and for 2024, the Renegade was retired. While it is available in other markets still, there's always a chance for it to return.
